# POS Assignment

Define how employees select and confirm their location and register when they log in to the POS.

## What it is

POS Assignment controls how each employee chooses or confirms their location (store, warehouse, site) and register (terminal, cash drawer) when they log in. It decides whether they pick manually each time, have one pre-selected, or are locked to one they cannot change.

**Two separate things:**

* **Login behavior** — how an employee selects a location and register at login. That's what you set here, on the POS Assignment card. See [Set an employee's login behavior](/netsuite-admin-guide/overview-1/pos-assignment/set-login-behavior.md).
* **Access** — which locations and registers an employee is *allowed* to use. That's set separately, in each location's **POS Access** settings. See [Locations](/netsuite-admin-guide/overview-1/locations.md).

## When you'd use it

Use POS Assignment when:

* You're setting up a new employee and want to define how they select their location/register at login.
* You want some employees to always use the same register (fewer login steps, clearer accountability).
* You want others to choose manually each time (more flexibility).
* You're changing an employee's login behavior (for example, promoting them to a roaming manager role).

## Before you start

* **Who can do this:** NetSuite admins and users with subsidiary configuration permissions.
* **What must be set up first:**
  * The employee must already have portal access to SphericalBRM. See [Give User Access](/client-admin-guide/managing-users/give-user-access.md).
  * Locations and registers must be configured in your subsidiary. See [Locations](/netsuite-admin-guide/overview-1/locations.md).
  * The employee's access to each location and register is set separately, in each location's **POS Access** settings.

## In this section

* [Set an employee's login behavior](/netsuite-admin-guide/overview-1/pos-assignment/set-login-behavior.md) — add an employee and choose how they pick a location and register.
* [What employees see at login](/netsuite-admin-guide/overview-1/pos-assignment/employee-login-experience.md) — how each behavior looks to the employee.

## Migration note

If your subsidiary was created before POS Assignment was available, you may see a banner warning that the system is using an older register-assignment behavior. Saving the first POS Assignment entry for any employee switches the subsidiary to the new model automatically. After that, add all new employees to POS Assignment.
